Individual Psychotherapy Manhattan

While I have been working with couples for 30 years, I actually started my professional practice working with individuals and continue to work with men and women individually.  I consider myself an “interactive therapist” and approach therapy as a joint venture where I will help you determine and achieve your goals and evolve to where you want to be in your life whether that means having an intimate and rewarding relationship, being free from depression or anxiety, achieving career objectives, making difficult life-changing decisions and enhancing the quality and joy in your life.

APPROACHES: I strive for connectedness above all else. I prefer to honestly offer the knowledge I possess and accept my own humanness and my own vulnerabilities. I do employ a variety of clinical interventions depending upon the situation and person. I bring a lot of experience to the table and draw from a variety of clinical options to make a good match for your particular needs such as:

  • Psychodynamic insight-oriented therapy
  • Attachment theory
  • Supportive/Educational therapy
  • Cognitive/Behavioral Interventions
  • Family Systems therapy
  •  Existential therapy
  •

Besides our time together in session, I will often suggest readings or exercises that might enhance your therapeutic experience and encourage you to work in between our sessions.

    MY EXPERTISE
In addition to couples counseling, my areas of expertise include, but are not limited to:

    • RELATIONSHIP ISSUES:
Including commitment fears, negative repetitive patterns, sexual issues, poor partner choices,  marital difficulties and family of origin issues.
    • MEN’S ISSUES:
For years I have specialized in work with men and helping them to determine their life goals and overcome fears of intimacy and commitment.   I founded and directed the New York Center for Men from 1981-1986 where I ran workshops, conscious-raising groups and group therapy for men.
    • DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY
      :Long term and acute
    • LIFE TRANSITIONS:
Including career change, divorce and bereavement
    • PARENTING:
Helping parents set boundaries and establish strong and healthy connections with their children, including children of divorced parents.
    • FAMILY OF ORIGIN ISSUES:
Helping persons resolve differences and/or issues of alienation within their own families.

What To Expect in Your First Session:
Our first session will be about defining what it is that brings you into therapy at this particular moment in your life. We will work towards understanding what issues you are working on and what goals you have for yourself. I will try to gain, through our conversation, an understanding of what you'd like to accomplish.  Your work, in the preliminary session, will be to determine if you feel comfortable with me and if you believe I can create a safe place where you can explore issues.

Therapy usually takes place once weekly and will last as long as you feel you need to achieve your goals which can be anywhere from a few months to a few  years.
